Very interesting article ! Thank you Laura

The subtitle “AI for clicks and cash” in the piece on Trisomy 21 made me think of “charity porn” and how social media exploits vulnerability for profit.

Regarding data in France, recent ones show disabled people face more violence than non-disabled people, with women hit hardest: 7.3% vs. 5.1% report abuse (Data : Observatoire des Inégalités, 2022), and nearly 1 in 5 disabled women (16%) say they’ve been raped which is far above the rate for all women (9%) (Data : FOP x LADAPT, 2022). Low income makes it worse: 31% of poorer disabled women report domestic violence, vs. 6% of wealthier ones (Data : FOP x LADAPT, 2022). Furthermore, nearly 90% of autistic women have experienced sexual violence in their lifetime (Data : Association Francophone de Femmes Autistes, 2019).

These figures resurfaced as parliament debated changes to the Allocation Adulte Handicapée (AAH), a disability benefit, that would have reduced disabled women’s economic independence. The stats have major blind spots too: no intersectional lens on race or gender identity, which are hard to measure in France.
